Happy Australia Day from FloorSquares! What are you doing to celebrate being Australian this year?

We love celebrating being Aussie at Floorsquares, so much so that we thought we would share this super delicious Anzac Recipe with you!

However these sweet little biscuits came to be, they’re quite scrumptious. If you have never tasted an Anzac Biscuit you are surely not a true Australian. They taste sort of like a slightly crispy oatmeal cookie with the addition of coconut. Traditionally they are made with dessicated coconut and golden syrup. Enjoy!

ANZAC Biscuits

Yield: 24 cookies

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
Pinch of salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 tablespoons Lyle’s golden syrup or light corn syrup
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
6 tablespoons boiling water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with silicone baking mats or parchment paper.

In a large bowl combine flour, oats, sugar, coconut, and salt.

In a small saucepan melt butter and corn syrup. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and carefully add to butter mixture. Stir to combine.

Add butter mixture to flour mixture and stir to combine. Drop tablespoonfuls on prepared baking sheets, spreading 2 inches apart. Flatten dough balls with your hand.

Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown and firm, rotating baking sheets halfway through. Transfer sheets to wire racks to cool. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Only 4 days ’til Christmas!

To celebrate Christmas we thought we would share this tasty Christmas dessert for you to enjoy! This delicious treat will keep you cool in the heat this festive season!

Screen Shot 2013-12-20 at 2.38.39 PM

Christmas ice-cream terrine
It is probably going to be too hot on Christmas day for the traditional Christmas “pud”!  So, we have included a recipe for something that still retains a bit of Christmas tradition, but is a little cooler!

1 x 1.5L ctn Streets Blue Ribbon vanilla ice-cream
3 x 100g pkts multicoloured glace cherries, halved
2 x 100g pkts blanched almonds
1 x 2L ctn chocolate ice-cream
325g (1 cup) Blackwood Lane fruit mince
Fresh raspberries, to serve
Icing sugar, to dust

Line bases and sides of two 11cm-deep, 10.5 x 21cm (base measurement) loaf pans with non-stick baking paper, allowing the 2 long sides to overhang. Place the vanilla ice-cream in the fridge for 30 minutes to soften slightly. Transfer to a stainless-steel mixing bowl and fold in the cherries until combined.
Divide the ice-cream mixture among prepared pans and use the back of a spoon to smooth the surface. Tap firmly on the work surface to remove any air bubbles. Cover with foil and place in the freezer for 4-6 hours or until very firm.
Meanwhile, cook the almonds in a small non-stick frying pan over medium heat, tossing, for 3-4 minutes or until toasted. Set aside to cool slightly. Coarsely chop.
Place the chocolate ice-cream in the fridge for 30 minutes to soften slightly. Transfer to a stainless-steel mixing bowl. Fold in the fruit mince and almonds until well combined.
Spoon the chocolate ice-cream mixture over the vanilla ice-cream mixture in the pans and smooth the surface. Tap firmly on the work surface to remove any air bubbles. Cover with foil and place in the freezer for a further 10-12 hours or until very firm.
Remove ice-cream terrines from the freezer and turn onto serving platters. Remove the baking paper and top the terrines with raspberries. Dust with icing sugar and serve immediately.

Yes, there’s still time!

Hasn’t Christmas come way to fast this year? It feels like it was only a few months ago I was writing down my New Years resolutions with so much ambition and excitement for the year ahead.

If re-carpeting a room in your house was on your list, or you really wanted to make over the home before the relatives are in town for Christmas then don’t feel defeated just yet!Floorsquares carpet tiles are DIY soft and seamless peel and stick residential carpet, meaning you don’t need to waste time tracking down a tradie to do the job for you!

There are still a lot of misconceptions about carpet tiles out there. The most common misconception is that carpet tiles are only good for commercial areas. This is simply not true! Carpet tiles are good for almost any installation. And if you are the creative type, you’ll find a lot of versatility with colors and patterns for unique design.

Here are some reasons why Carpet Tiles are a great move:

– Carpet tiles are in fact a “do-it-yourself” product. They can be rotated or changed and picked up to clean and then put back in place.

– It is so simple to rotate tiles if you notice any wear in high traffic areas.

– Carpet tiles give you an insulated floor with built in acoustical noise reduction.

– If your room already has furniture in it you don’t have to move it totally out of the room to install your carpet tile.

– Carpet tiles are wrinkle free for life- no need to worry about wrinkles developing in your carpet like most other carpet.

– With our amazing 25% off Christmas discount you can carpet your home for a fraction of the price!

How to measure a room!

How to Measure a Room!

Not sure how many carpet tiles you need to cover your whole floor? Don’t worry, it’s really not as hard as you think! Just follow these simple steps and you will be ready to go!

Firstly, all you need to get started is a tape measure, calculator, pen & paper.

Take the tape and measure the length of the room from wall to wall. Let’s call this wall ‘a’. Now measure the width of the room, wall ‘b’. Make sure you record your measurements in metres! Grab your calculator and divide wall ‘a’ with 0.6 and then divide wall ‘b’ with 0.6 as well. Once you have these two results multiply them together to get your total number of squares needed! Have a look at the diagram below to see these steps more simply!

As you can see, the floorsquares are in fact square – 60cm x 60cm. This is why we need to divide the length and width by 0.6 to get the right number squares for our room.

We suggest you order 5% more than the total number of Floorsquares calculated. This not only gives you a little extra just in case, but also leaves you with a few squares spare to store in case of emergency! You never know when you might need to make a quick carpet square swap after a clumsy spill or accidental stain.

Still unsure of how to calculate the number of carpet tiles you need? Call us on 08 6103 0444 or email sales@floorsquares.com.au and we will talk you through it step by step!

Floor Squares Sample Requests

Having a hard time choosing your carpet tiles? If you are carpeting a large area in your home choosing the right colour can be an incredibly hard decision as you most likely will be living with the same colour for a number of years! You will want to choose a carpet colour that works well with the rest of the decor in your home already, unless you are intending to do a complete home makeover! Here at FloorSquares we understand it’s hard to make the right decision based on a small image viewed on a screen. That’s why we have created sample swatches! The samples are cut from full size carpet squares and will therefore represent the true colour and texture of the carpet squares.

The first two samples 10cm x 10cm are free . For any further samples there will be a $5.00 charge per sample. These will be mailed to you directly via Australia Post. We suggest when you receive your samples, place them on the floor and look at the samples while standing up to really appreciate how it will look once laid on the floor. There are many factors to consider when choosing the right carpet colour for your room. You may want to ask yourself the following questions to assist you in your decision:

Is there a lot of traffic? Is the space you are carpeting a high traffic area? Will you be frequently walking over this space? Is it an area that can be subject to spills and stains? Lighter coloured carpets are usually easier to remove stains and keep clean. Although darker colours usually hide the dirt and marks for longer.

What do I want to do with this space? Do you want to brighten up a dark room with no life? Or maybe tone down an a space with something a bit softer? Our Posh Toasted Taupe swatch is a perfect choice for darker family rooms, living rooms and hallways. Our tiles don’t stain easily but if it were to mark this colour wears well and tends not to show stains as badly as some of the lighter colors.

Does it match your personality? If you are someone who is more casual and chilled out you might choose a carpet that has warm tones to create a relaxed feel. Someone who is detail-orientated however, would generally prefer blues, blacks, whites, grays and jewel tones. Which colours make you feel more comfortable and at home?

Will it compete with your existing decor? What is the focal point of this room? Would you like your new carpet to make a statement and catch your eye? Or would you prefer it to compliment an existing piece of art that already is the center of attention. You don’t want your carpet to be competing with anything else in the room as it will create a feeling of confusion or busyness.

If all else fails… choose a beige! It is a safe color that goes well with white walls but also works with other colors. A mottled light brown rug will camouflage pet activities and stand up well to daily wear. We recommend our Tunis swatch from our Posh Range or perhaps Amaretto or Milk & Cookies from our Tranquility Range!

Create custom rugs of any shape or size!

Thinking of adding a fresh new look to a room in your home but don’t want to break the bank? How about designing and creating your very own area rug to spruce things up a little? Floorsquares are an innovative design of carpet squares that you can assemble yourself to create custom rugs, runners or wall-to-wall carpet of any shape or size!

There are a number of reasons why we think our carpet tile rugs and runners will look great in your home- but here are our top 5!

1: They add warmth – Area rugs provide actual thermal resistance (otherwise known as R-value), which basically means they insulate your home, keeping it warmer for longer. In fact, carpet and rugs add up to 10 times more warmth than hard wood floors to your home, not only making home cosier and more comfortable but also saving you on the heating bill.

2: They create a fresh new look – You will be amazed at how different your room can look with a simple new rug or runner. Whether you are adding a pop of colour or introducing tones that compliment your existing decor, the possibilities are endless with what you can do! Just think of how proud you’ll be knowing you designed and created this new feature piece on your own!

3: Creates new spaces – If you have a large room that is used for more than one purpose an area rug can help you to define your space, giving you more intimate and organized room “zones.” For example, by placing sofas around a plush area rug you will instantly create a homely lounge area, clearly defining it from your dining or office area.

4: Pet & children friendly – You’re children will love this soft new surface they can play on! You will also be stress-free knowing your child is safe when they make those unpredictable falls and stumbles. Pets can also have a comfortable space to lie when with the family inside.

5: Easy to clean & replace – If you are someone who is forever cleaning spills and stains then carpet tiles are for you! They are not only easy to clean and maintain but they also are easy to replace when you get those certain stains that have no hope of removal. You can just replace the tile that has the stain on it rather than having to pay for a complete new rug or room of carpet! Doesn’t that sound great?Create-rugs-Fbook
